MMAMoneyLine’s Updated 2010 “Pros’ Picks” Contest Standings Through August

We’re officially 2/3 of the way through 2010 and subsequently MMAMoneyLine’s 2010 Pros’ Picks contest.  I want to take this time to once again thank all of the Pros’ Picks participants.  Their picks and insight allowed me to consider possibilities I overlooked as a bettor; possibilities that in many cases turned out to be very lucrative.

In this 2010 Pros’ Picks leader board update, I decided to do a few things a little bit different.  First off, I made the win percentages more specific due to the closeness of the contest.  I imagine when this thing is all said and done at the end of December, the winner will be decided by a fraction rather than a whole percentage point.

Secondly, I thought it would be a good reference point to find out the win/loss record of all favorites in 2010.  Naturally, I’ve only analyzed fights that were involved in MMAMoneyLine’s Pros’ Picks (UFC, WEC and Strikeforce main card fights).  It is quite a feat for anyone to have a better win percentage than the favorites’ overall win percentage in a given period.  Said MMA bettor/analyst/blogger/journalist etc. would have to essentially outfox MMA handicappers and other bettors alike.  Although the value of an MMA bettor lies in how much return he or she gets from their bets, there certainly is something to be said about people who ca accurately pick winners.

Here are the current standings for MMAMoneyLine’s 2010 Pros’ Picks contest (in descending order) including the aforementioned favorites percentage:

Favorites – 65.789%

MMAMoneyLine – 63.887%

WatchKalibRun – 61.458%

MMAConvert – 61.223%

MiddleEasy – 60.987%

MMAHive (formerly MMAMafia) – 60.965%

MMABettingBlog – 60.550%

MMAValor – 60.088%

MMAAdNet – 56.221%

MMAMoneyLine’s Updated 2010 “Pros’ Picks” Contest Standings Through June

If March was an intense month for MMA fans, the logjam of mixed martial arts happening in mid-June is going to be as, if not more exciting.  Coming fresh off the heels of UFC 115 and Strikeforce – Los Angeles, we have Bellator 22, The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale, WEC 49, Bellator 23 and Strikeforce – Fedor VS Werdum right around the corner.  It will certainly be an exciting time for MMA fans, and hopefully lucrative times for my fellow sportsbettors.

If you’ve been keeping up with MMAMoneyLine’s “Pros’ Picks”, you know about the competition going on between myself and a few of my peers in the online MMA world.  As to be expected from a knowledgeable field of writers and bloggers, the race is getting very close toward the midpoint of the contest.  As it stands, Zak at WatchKalibRun is the most accurate at 63%.  Behind him are several competitors in the 61% accuracy range.

Mike Hammersmith’s TUF 11 Analysis

Hey folks! This is Mike Hammersmith from MMAMafia, doing a guest blog for MMAMoneyLine on the current season of The Ultimate Fighter.

TUF is a huge vehicle for UFC and MMA in general, and for anyone who is looking to clean up on fantasy or online betting, it’s that necessary viewing on your Wednesday night. Granted, some people can hardly stomach the ridiculous antics inside the house, and a large chunk of the talent on the show is thrown to the wayside shortly after filming, but the fact remains TUF turns out a great deal of fighters. In fact, nearly 30% of the current UFC roster is comprised of fighters who have been on TUF, either as coaches or fighters, making this one of the single largest talent pools for the UFC. So, if we have to watch TUF to pick up on future stars and betting prospects for the TUF Finale every season, why not make some money off the show itself?

Considering this is the prime source of MMA gambling info on the net, MMAMoneyline and myself decided we should run an article concerning TUF 11, and BetUs unique wagering system concerning the show. As explained in a previous blog post, BetUs runs a series of lines for TUF, where you can bet on who wins the season, and have a chance to win some serious money if you do your homework. These lines will change over time, and often reappear a day or two before each episode, with new odds for each fighter. Considering the smallest line for this show was +600 to start, you can see how getting in a smart pick early can make you cash in the long run.

What I will be doing here in my guest blog is posting critiques and information on fighters as the season progresses, and giving you the best possible chance of cashing in on these odds early. The tactic here is to pick up two or three fighters early who you think will make it all the way to the end of the show. Your best possible scenario is that you end up with BOTH fighters in the finale, and guaranteed money at the conclusion of the show, often at odds around +500 as the season progresses.

I recommend you bet 1u per fighter, and keep track of the lowest odds you’ve taken thus far, and make sure your bets don’t exceed your lowest possible income from the winner. For instance, if you take Kyle Noke at +600, you should make a maximum of 5 bets, including Noke, throughout the season. That way, as long as one of your bets goes through, you make a profit. I recommend you take two bets initially, and pick up other fighters if and when one of those is eliminated during the course of the competition. So, without further delay, here is my rundown of the cast after Episode one, a recap of Episode Two, and a list of the best bets, in my mind, for the season thus far: (more…)

The Future Of The UFC Heavyweight Division

UFC Heavyweights

Joe Silva…give me a call!  Right now, the UFC’s Heavyweight division is as stacked (if not more) as any other weight class in history including UFC’s Light Heavyweight and Welterweight juggernauts of yore.  Zuffa’s Heavyweight class has it all:  new age Heavyweight behemoths like Lesnar, Carwin, Velasquez and Duffee; BJJ aces like Nogueira, Mir, Gonzaga, Struve and Nelson and feel good strikers like dos Santos, Slice, Mitrione, Buentello, Kongo, Barry, Cro Cop and Yvel.

With all the chaos, promise and excitement involved in the UFC’s heaviest weight class, I couldn’t help myself to analyze what the near and distant future holds.  Here is a thorough rundown of the scheduled and rumored upcoming Heavyweight contests, as well as my opinion on what late 2010 and 2011 should and hopefully will bring. Be warned, this isn’t short!

James Irvin’s Weight Change

Due to the reaction on the ‘net of James Irvin‘s dramatic weight cut, I decided to do a little side by side comparison. Here is a little collage comparing James Irvin over three weight classes: Heavyweight against Mike Kyle at UFC 51 in 2007, Light Heavyweight against Luis Cane at UFC 79 and Middleweight against Alessio Sakara at UFC On Versus 1.

Pretty big difference here, especially between 205 and 185. Judging from all the Irvin interviews I’ve seen in the last few weeks, he seems to be taking everything in stride. I still think he’s going to smash Sakara, but he might need a CLIF bar between rounds.

The Ultimate Fighter 11 Season Odds

As usual, BetUS has posted odds for the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.  Although the rumors of veteran fighters David Loiseau, Nick Thompson and Jason Lambert  turned out to be false, as did the intriguing possibilities of Robert Drysdale and Matt Major, this season should be fairly entertaining.

This season’s coaches, as you may have heard, are Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.  I’m interested to see Chuck’s coaching ability.  Judging from his last go ’round, Tito Ortiz should handle the coaching reigns very well.  This season will lead up to a future fight, possibly at UFC 115, between the two former UFC Light Heavyweight champions (contrary to recent reports of a Chuck Liddell/Rich Franklin contest in June).

As of the writing of this post, Kyle Noke is the favorite at +600.  This Jackson Mixed Martial Arts fighter holds victories over the surging George Sotiropoulos and Bellator Middleweight champ Hector Lombard.  A few other favorites are Josh Bryant, Costantinos Philippou, Kris McCray and Kyacey Uscola.  For more information on this season’s fighters, Sherdog has an excellent writeup on each mixed martial artist.

The Ultimate Fighter 11 debuts March 31st after UFC Fight Night 21: Florian VS. Gomi. Enjoy an MMA packed end of March!

MMAMoneyLine’s 2010 “Pros’ Picks” Contest Standings

Now is as good of a time as any to give everyone an update on MMAMoneyLine’s 2010 “Pros’ Picks” contest. It’s pretty close (as expected), but Zak from WatchKalibRun is currently wearing the yellow jersey. Steve from MMAConvert and Mike over at MMAMafia are hot on his heels.

Once again, congrats to Zak from WatchKalibRun for the early dominance. In addition, props to the guys over at MMABettingBlog for a stellar job at UFC 110. Stay tuned for updates!

Chris Bennett Fundraiser

A few members of the online MMA world have brought the Chris Bennett fundraiser to my attention. MMAMafia (not that Mafia) has created a page to give you the backstory on this fundraiser.  Bennett is looking to compete in the Pan Am Jiu-Jitsu Championships in California and needs some financial help.  MMAMafia has gotten some pretty cool prizes together that they will be auctioning off, including autographed Shane Carwin and Efrain Escudero shirts.

I suggest everyone check out the Chris Bennett fundraiser site and try to help the young man get an opportunity to display his skills.  Most people who visit my site are MMA bettors, and simply donating the win money from one bet could give Chris the opportunity to make it to the next level.

MMAMoneyLine’s 2010 “Pros’ Picks” Contest

MMAMoneyLine's 2010

I’m a little late on getting this out to the general public, but if you frequent MMAMoneyLine’s “Pros’ Picks” section you’ve probably noticed the fact that I’ve started keeping score. This is because MMAMoneyLine is having a friendly contest that includes several respected members of the online MMA world.

As it stands, MMAMoneyLine will post “Pros’ Picks” for every UFC, WEC and Strikeforce card of 2010. At the end of 2010 I will tally up each participant’s record, calculate their win percentages and choose a winner. The winner will get a grand prize including a (not going to say the amount in public) dollar gift certificate to MMAWarehouse amongst other perks.

The 8 participants in the inaugural “Pros’ Picks” contest are Pat from MMABettingBlog, Zak from WatchKalibRun, Steve from MMAConvert, Zeus (or sometimes Shane Carwin or another Twitter follower of his) from MiddleEasy, Jordan from MMAAdNet, Josh from MMAValor, Mike from MMAMafia and myself…Eric from MMAMoneyLine.

The “Pros’ Picks” section of MMAMoneyLine is a great tool for MMA bettors to see where knowledgeable MMA fans, bloggers and journalists stand.  I respect the opinion and analysis of every one of these people participating in this competition.  It should also be interesting to see who has the “best eye” in the MMA blogosphere.  Being able to consistently pick winners can make a man some serious money!

I strongly suggest making MMAMoneyLine’s “Pros’ Picks” a must read before any MMA event, especially if you are an avid sports bettor.  Hopefully you enjoy the contest and it helps with your research.  Here is the leaderboard (by popular demand) for 2010 thus far:

Is Frank Mir For Real?

Mir

That is the question I pose to you, loyal site readers and MMA bettors.

There is no doubt Frank Mir‘s stock in the UFC Heavyweight division went up a few notches after submitting Cheick Kongo at UFC 107. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt was able to beat a very good striker at his own game en route to securing a quick, fight-ending guillotine choke. But does this win mean that Mir is a legitimate favorite to the UFC Heavyweight strap? Before the Frank Mir hype train leaves the station, let me make a few points about his post-Brandon Vera beatdown career.

“The Ultimate Fighter” Finalist Futility

73382942CF002_Ultimate_FighWhile doing research for the CB Dollaway/Jay Silva fight, I came across some startling statistics.  It seems like a hot topic as of late is “who is going to be the first reality show winner to get cut?” question.  This discussion was brought on because of the ongoing struggles of the likes of Mac Danzig, Amir Sadollah and Nate Diaz.

While digging a bit deeper, I found it pretty interesting how freezing cold a streak the TUF finalists are riding.  Lets look at the last fights of each winner and runner up of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality show: (more…)

3 Upcoming Underdog Bets To Think About

underdog1It has been a while since I’ve made a blog post, but as I was scanning the money lines for the upcoming events I felt compelled to get some thoughts down.  As a long time MMA bettor, it is in my nature to immediately identify (what I believe to be) underdogs that have a better chance than the books are giving ‘em.  Finding these inconsistencies between a sports book’s odds and actual history and knowledge based odds is one of the keys to being a successful MMA bettor.

While scanning the odds for UFC 102, UFC 103, UFC 104, UFC 105, UFC 106, UFC 107, UFN 19 & WEC 43, there are some underdogs that stick out to me.  These fighters aren’t being given much of a chance by handicappers, but sharp wagerers should keep a keen eye on them.  Here are 3 particular underdogs who have what it takes to pull off a W and put some serious cash in your pocket. Strikeforce – Carano VS. Cyborg News & Notes

carano_cyborg_bigI have updated the “Pros’ Picks” for this weekend’s “Strikeforce – Carano VS. Cyborg” main card.  In addition, the odds for the event will be continually updated up until fight time.  Thank you to Ben at CagePotato, Zak at WatchKalubRun, Zeus at MiddleEasy and Steve at MMAConvert for the contributions.

Some thoughts on “Strikeforce – Carano VS. Cyborg”:

-After watching Cyborg Santos’ training video for her upcoming fight against Gina Carano, I feel more confident in my pick.  Cyborg will be Carano’s stiffest to date, and I think she has the skill, preparation and camp to cement herself as Strikeforce’s #1 female fighter.  I think Carano is a bit overrated, and while she is a very talented mixed martial artist, Cyborg is otherworldly.

-Mitsuihiro Ishida shouldn’t be that big of an underdog, especially because he’s beaten Gilbert Melendez once.  I know there are concerns because he took this fight on late notice and that this fight is in America instead of Japan, but Ishida shoudn’t be at +200.  Most bloggers seem to agree that Ishida is being undervalued here, seeing as he is 67% to win in MMAMoneyLine’s “Pro’s Picks”.

-Nick Diaz/CSAC let me down.  I think both parties are to blame for Strikeforce’s latest event snafu, but hopefully Jay Hieron and Jesse Taylor still put on a good fight.

-As an MMA bettor, I believe that any fighter over +400 is worth a bet (or at least a thorough analysis).  Mike Kyle is getting no respect from the sportsbooks, even with his victory over Rafael Cavalcante.  Will Fabricio Werdum win?  Probably.  Can Werdum be knocked out?  Absolutely.  Is the Fabricio Werdum in 2009 the same Fabricio Werdum of 2006?  Questionable…at best.

If you are planning on wagering on any fights on this card, be sure to keep watching the betting lines, check over the “Pro’s Picks” and check the fighter profiles either by going to the “MMA Fighters” page or clicking on the name of the fighter in the odds table.
